The sports culture in and around the Boston area is iconic to say the least, and adding pickleball to the mix has been in high anticipation. Well, now the wait is over for this fervent sports community.

As one of the last major cities in the United States without a true dedicated indoor facility, PickleBOS with two locations has drastically changed the sports landscape in the New England area. Eleven courts in South Boston and 10 due to open soon in Charlestown has Beantown all abuzz.

“The city has very few outdoor courts, so players were regularly waiting hours just to get on a court,” says Alex Karsos, founder of PickleBOS. “Demand was clearly outpacing supply, yet there was no purpose-built space in the city. When we saw that gap, we knew Boston was ready—the community just needed a home.”

What makes PickleBOS so unique and on the cutting edge is the utilization of PodPlay, a video replay and scoring technology and a first-of-its-kind experience for most pickleball players.

Karsos adds, “We’ve also installed LSI pro uplighting throughout, which—paired with our signature brick-red walls—creates exceptional visibility and a distinctive atmosphere. Our playing surface is Acrytech Cushion-X, a premium cushioned court that’s easier on players’ joints and built for serious play.

“Every decision we made in building these facilities came back to one question: What makes the best possible experience for the player?”

PodPlay is a big part of that, and Boston pickleballers are raving about it. The software powers the facility’s app and hardware on every court. It handles live scoring and delivers instant video replays. Those replays aren’t just for competitive review—they capture the moments players want to remember and share.

They use the app to book courts, chat with each other, sign up for leagues and tournaments, and manage everything in one place.

“For us, this technology isn’t optional, it’s foundational to delivering a player-first experience,” says Karsos.

So far at PickleBOS, ladder leagues that run in six-week cycles have proven to be very popular while tournament action began in April.

Of course, when people think of Boston, they automatically think of the Celtics, Patriots, Bruins and Red Sox. Now that pickleball is part of the community’s consciousness, what’s the likelihood of local legends like Larry Bird or Bobby Orr swinging a paddle on one of PickleBOS’ courts?

Karsos replied, “Boston’s sports culture is unlike anywhere else in the country, and we absolutely want to tap into that. We’re actively exploring partnerships and events that bring together the city’s passionate sports fan base with our courts. Whether it’s athlete appearances, team-hosted events, or charity tournaments tied to one of Boston’s great franchises, these kinds of collaborations are very much on our radar.

“Stay tuned ... we think there’s a natural connection between the city’s love of sports and what we’re building at PickleBOS.”

Most pickleballers are looking for that special vibe that resonates throughout a facility, and so far PickleBOS has captured that and then some. As Karsos puts it, “PickleBOS feels like a place built for them, not just a warehouse that happens to have pickleball nets.”
