Passion for Pickleball in Upstate New York

When you are located just 10 miles from Niagara Falls, considered by many the honeymoon capital of the world, passion is reflected in all who play at Pickleball Island in upstate New York.

Of course, love has always been a part of tennis’ lexicon, but while it’s not part of pickleball’s vernacular, the feeling for the sport generated by the owners and players is palpable in the community.

Founded by Ken Knight in 2017, Pickleball Island is one of the largest indoor pickleball facilities in the Northeast, boasting seven courts and a lounge. A pro shop offers name-brand pickleball paddles and accessories along with logoed merchandise. Expansion is in the works as three more courts will be added later this year. “We are open three times a day, seven days a week during the fall, winter and spring, while we reduce our indoor hours during the summer months so people can play outdoors,” says Knight, who is joined in the club ownership ranks by Jason Santerre and Dave Miller.

Pickleball Island hosts three tournaments every year—Speedy Singles, Dilly Dilly and Dinking for Dollars. Recently, a fundraising tournament generated over $5,000 benefiting juvenile diabetes research and treatment. Another event was held to help offset the costs incurred by single mothers in the area.

In early September, Pickleball Island is staging an event to help bring awareness of the sport to area youth. “Glory be to Kids” will introduce pickleball to many children in the Grand Island school system. Knight adds, “We have held numerous demonstrations in the local schools and have had more than 20 physical education teachers come out to Pickleball Island in hopes that they will begin teaching the sport in their PE classes.”

For those who have never picked up a pickleball paddle, Pickleball Island affords individuals a free lesson. Four certified instructors are available to instill the love of the game that is inherent in all who play the sport.

As an honorary “8th Wonder of the World,” Niagara Falls—while not in Pickleball Island’s immediate backyard—provides the perfect complement for all those who find themselves falling head over heels for pickleball.  •
